MDA awards Singtel trial IPTV licence

Dated: 7 November 2006

SingTel has been issued a six-month trial Internet Protocol TV (IPTV) service licence that will enable them to conduct technical trials over IP. This includes the delivery of content on High Definition (HD) which offers consumers picture quality of up to five times far superior resolution compared to analogue TV, and an almost cinematic experience with surround sound capabilities.

IPTV refers to Internet Protocol Television and is generally defined as the transmission of television programming, taking the form of either scheduled or on-demand programmes via a broadband connection using IP. Users access the service through PCs. Some service providers also provide the option of accessing their service through the TVs via a set-top box.

MDA welcomes the entry of new players like SingTel as this will inject vibrancy into the Singapore media scene and offer consumers more choices.
