Indonesian Film Wins Inaugural Asian Short Film Awards@ScreenSingapore

ScreenSingapore today announced the winner of the inaugural Asian Short Film Awards@ScreenSingapore, selected by renowned film director, Oliver Stone, who headed the judging panel. The winning film, Payung Merah (Red Umbrella) was submitted by Edward Gunawan and Andri Cung, who crafted a supernatural thriller about a taxi driver who learns to truly appreciate his family after picking up a beautiful yet mysterious passenger.

Devesh Chetty (Director and CEO of RGM Media), one of the judges on the jury, presented a certificate to Edward Gunawan. RGM Media is the sponsor of the SGD$20,000 cash prize of the Asian Short Film Awards@ScreenSingapore.

Devesh Chetty said, “Edward and Andri are a credit to the inaugural Asian Short Film Awards @ ScreenSingapore. Their film, Red Umbrella, stood out as an assured, unique and bold take on an established genre. It highlights the directorial team's talent, confidence and vision. Both Edward and Andri are most certainly gifted filmmakers and ones to watch out for in the future."

The winner was announced at a media conference today at the official launch of ScreenSingapore. Mr Aubeck Kam, the Chief Executive Officer of Media Development Authority of Singapore (MDA), which is the host of ScreenSingapore, was joined by Mr Greg Coote, Chairman of the Board of ScreenSingapore, to mark the start of ScreenSingapore, which takes place from 5 to 12 June.

High-profile titans in the film industry were also present to share their perspectives on Singapore’s role as an international business convention. Addressing the media were Jon Landau (Chief Operating Officer of Lightstorm Entertainment, and producer of Avatar and Titanic);Shekhar Kapur (Board of ScreenSingapore member and Academy Award®winning director of Elizabeth);Antoine de Clermont-Tonnerre (Producer of MACT Productions and President of Unifrance);Xu Lin (Vice-President of Enlight Media);Daniel Yun (Founder and CEO of Homerun Asia);as well as Jimmy Lau (Managing Director of Experia Events, organiser of ScreenSingapore).

As of today, over 700 trade delegates have registered for ScreenSingapore, where they will be able to attend six “In Conversation” sessions, three days of Expo@ScreenSingapore with 70 representatives from 14 exhibiting companies, a World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) Masterclass, a workshop on film producing with Ashok Amritraj (Chairman and CEO of Hyde Park Entertainment), 14 Previews@ScreenSingapore, closed-door studio presentations by five major studios, as well as a slew of Red Carpet Premieres and Gala Premieres. In addition, there will also be the Film Finance Forum by Winston Baker.

The highly anticipated series of Red Carpet Premieres, which includes World, International and Asia-Pacific premieres, will open tonight with “China Night”, featuring a special screening of Devil Inside Me and the Mural trailer, and ScreenSingapore will culminate with the Asia-Pacific Premiere of Larry Crowne, of which Tom Hanks will walk the Red Carpet.

ScreenSingapore features a diverse programme that caters to the different players from across the value chain, including the financiers, studios, filmmakers, talents, distributors, exhibitors and audiences. Among the key leaders in the film industry who will be attending ScreenSingapore are Jim Gianopulos (Chairman and CEO of Fox Filmed Entertainment);Jon Landau (producer of Avatar and Titanic), and Yu Dong (Chairman of Bona Film Group), as well as film luminaries Tom Hanks, Gordon Chan, Julien Leclercq, Yong Mun Chee, Sukee Chew, Aya Omasa and Zhang Ziyi.

A series of networking events will take place during the event, such as the Business Matching Breakfast to allow Singapore filmmakers to network with their international counterparts.

ScreenSingapore is also a thought-leadership event where business leaders gather to debate and discuss the future of the filmed entertainment business through a series of master classes and conferences helmed by industry leaders. It also serves as a marketing platform for the latest movie releases to be launched into Asia Pacific and beyond through the red carpet premieres that are covered by the media from around the region.
