The Media Development Authority of Singapore (MDA) will lead 14 leading Singapore media companies and some of the best of Singapore’s talent and content to the 11th edition of the China International Film &TV Programmes Exhibition (CIFTPE), held in Beijing from 22 to 24 August 2013. CIFTPE is a key Chinese trade market for foreign and domestic films, television dramas, documentaries and animation shows and is well attended by China’s top film and television companies.
More than 185 hours of quality Singapore films and TV programmes will be showcased at the 63-square-metre Singapore Pavilion at the Beijing Exhibition Centre (booth 12-15, Beijing Exhibition Centre Level 1, Hall 12). The content on showcase spans a wide range of genres, from horror, comedy and action movies, to television documentaries, lifestyle travelogues, and food and cultural programmes that meet the viewing taste of Chinese audiences.
Onsite at CIFTPE, Singapore’s MyChinaChannel and Shanghai Media Group will organise a forum to enable Chinese and Singapore film and television producers and distributors to network and explore business opportunities. There will also be a Singapore Media Content Showcase for content buyers, organised by Singapore’s MediaCorp and China International Television Corporation (CITVC).
Quality Singapore Content at CIFTPE
Two notable Singapore films, currently in production, are slated to make their market debut at CIFTPE.
Well-known local director Jack Neo, who recently broke the local box office for the top-grossing Singapore film of all time with Ah Boys to Men 2 《新兵正传2》, will showcase his latest work The Lion Men 《嘻哈舞狮团》. The film is a story about love, friendship and choices revolving a lion dance association. The two-part feature will be produced and distributed by Singapore’s mm2 Entertainment. Part One will be completed next year, and the director is seeking partnerships for a Chinese theatrical release.
Singapore-China co-production Meeting the Giant 《再见巨人》 directed by local actor Tay Ping Hui will also make its debut at the market. The film, co-produced by Clover Films (Singapore) and Stellar Megamedia International (China), is a story about the friendship between two basketball players – one from Singapore and the other from Guangzhou, China. Meeting the Giant 《再见巨人》 is slated for release in both China and Singapore in 2014.
Singapore broadcaster MediaCorp makes big push into China market
MediaCorp will also be introducing two of their anchor television Chinese dramas The Dream Makers 《志在四方》;and upcoming blockbuster drama about first generation Chinese immigrants to Singapore, The Journey: A Voyage 《唐山到南洋》. The Dream Makers 《志在四方》, which takes a behind-the-scene look at the lives of television celebrities and producers, is Singapore’s most popular local drama on the online platform.
Their lead cast, A-list MediaCorp stars Zoe Tay, Guo Liang and Desmond Tan will also be present at the Singapore Pavilion to lend star appeal to the two anchor programmes.
Singapore Pavilion Highlights
A Singapore-China Film &TV Forum will be organised by Singapore’s MyChinaChannel and Shanghai Media Group on Day 1 of the market. The Forum is a platform for Singapore and Chinese media companies to exchange insights into their respective film and TV markets, as well as seek out business collaboration opportunities.
Other local content offerings at the Singapore Pavilion include The Wedding Diary II 《结婚那件事之后》 a film depicting life after marriage and sequel to The Wedding Diary《结婚那件事》, which opened in theatres in China in May this year;and works in development including ATM《提款机!》, produced by Ha Yu (Hong Kong). In addition, there is also television adventure travelogue 2 Brothers 2 Cities; Sense of Our Flavours《本土味》, a series on the history, culture and heritage behind delicious Singapore cuisine such as Hainanese chicken rice and chili crab;and an eight-part documentary History from the Hills that tells the story of Singapore pioneers buried at Bukit Brown cemetery, the largest Chinese cemetery in the world outside China.

Overview of Singapore-China Media Collaboration
Singapore and China enjoy warm and close ties in media collaboration, underscored by a film co-production agreement signed in 2010. Singapore musicians such as JJ Lin, Stefanie Sun and Tanya Chua, as well as our television and film content enjoy good traction among Chinese audiences.
Over the years, Singapore’s media companies have been actively cultivating the Chinese audience. Examples of joint Singapore-China projects include Painted Skin a film co-production between MediaCorp Raintree Pictures (Singapore), China's Ningxia Film Studio (China) and Shanghai Film Group (China) which was one of the fastest films to break the RMB100m box office revenue threshold in China. Singapore documentary Little Big Dreams by ThreeSixZero, about Chinese children training to be in China’s Olympics gymnastics team, won the Gold Medal Award for Best Direction at the New York Festivals International TV Broadcasting Awards 2008, and has been shown in the United Kingdom, Belgium, Denmark, Germany, Hong Kong, Iceland, Ireland, Japan and Korea.
