The Internet of Things (IoT) refers to the network of items and devices, from home appliances to vehicles, embedded with software and sensors that enable them to connect, collect and exchange data. This helps create value based on information and data from everyday objects.

A living, breathing, dynamic network

IoT is both a significant industry vertical as well as a horizontal enabler for every other sector. It combines Information Technology , Telecommunications, Big Data and Analytics to enable the creation of business value for sectors from public health and transportation to logistics and navigation.

IoT is not just about being connected to multiple devices, but connecting them to a living, breathing, dynamic network. It helps deliver enhanced products for consumers, improve work processes and public services, and bring about better living experiences for everyone.

Growing the IoT ecosystem in Singapore

To support efforts to transform and enhance different industry sectors through IoT, IMDA is working on the following:

Catalysing NB-IoT development

IMDA has been working toward developing cheaper and longer-lasting sensors for a wide variety of applications, from water usage and logistics to energy. By tapping on Low Power Wide Area Network (LPWAN) technologies such as NarrowBand IoT (NB-IoT), sensors can be deployed to places without power access, thereby reducing costs.
