2016 Data-Driven Innovation Challenge empowers youth with hands-on data literacy skills

Top three teams beat out 42 submissions for the top awards in Data-Driven Innovation Challenge 2016.

Singapore - 19 October, 2016: Singapore youths had a nail-biting finish at the finals of the 2016 Data-Driven Innovation (DDI) Challenge for a Smart Nation, held by the Infocomm Media Development Authority of Singapore (IMDA) on 19th October.

Over 110 students from five institutes of higher learning (IHLs) – Singapore Institute of Technology, Singapore Management University, Singapore Polytechnic, Temasek Polytechnic and Nanyang Polytechnic - submitted a total of 42 projects over the nine-month competition. This was more than double the number of submissions from 2015’s competition. These were then whittled down to a final 13, before a panel of judges finalized the top three teams. The winning teams walked away with the grand prizes awarded by Mr. William Liu, Chairman of the National Cloud Computing Advisory Council.

“Singapore must continue to ensure its future generations are empowered with relevant training and tools to ensure they can actively participate in our digital future and become a Smart Nation. Exposing them to hands-on challenges with our second Data-Driven Innovation Challenge demonstrates the value of datasets and ICM as a digital multiplier when put in the hands of our young innovators and ensures they have hands-on knowledge of future technologies moving forward.” said IMDA Assistant Chief Executive Khoong Hock Yun.

The DDI Challenge tasked students to develop solutions, working prototypes and data visualisations using datasets, with at least one dataset from the Data-as-a-Service (DaaS) platform.

This continues IMDA’s promise to ensure the next generation of students are developed, empowered and trained with the skills necessary for the next wave of convergence and technological change. The DDI challenge focused on ensuring youths understood Big Data, dataset use, and the mashing of multiple datasets together, amongst others, and was conducted in a manner to ensure students developed proper data literacy skills.

The DDI challenge took place in two rounds. Round one started in January and lasted for nine months. At the end of the first round, participating IHLs selected up to three shortlisted teams per IHL to enter the finals. These shortlisted teams were then judged by a panel of senior industry experts on 19 October.

First prize – NewsInsider by Joseph Lim, Toh Yao Xiang and Gavin Tan from Singapore Institute of Technology – NewsInsider combines news articles, data analysis, data visualisation & infographics into a visual/typography interface intended to be capable of retrieving and displaying news for categories based on location or trends.

Second prize – Happy Wheel by Tay Hui Chun, Chin Bing Huang, Low Kay Se Cassey, Zainul Ariffin, Tan Ee Khai and Mohamed Najulah from Singapore Polytechnic – A navigational web/mobile platform application with checkpoints annotating obstacles for the disabled or wheelchair bound users navigating from one point to another point.

Third prize – Visualising Mandai by Ong Jia Min, Teo Wei Wei, Lim Xing Yi, Anita Koo Shi Qi, Tan Siew Yu from Singapore Institute of Technology – Makes use of existing sensing technologies by the Wildlife Reserves Singapore (WRS) to support staff operations of its attractions through a multimodal web/mobile application, data visualisation and infographics.
