Kampong Gelam launches new precinct level Digital Innovations new dedicated Digital Transformation Office to Coordinate Efforts

New partnerships (MC Payment -Tencent/WeChat, ShopBack and Dei) expand digital offerings beyond e-payment

Singapore – 31 October 2019: Kampong Gelam has launched new precinct-level digital innovation initiatives to attract visitors and elevate their experiences.

New Initiatives

One such initiative is Kampong Gelam’s partnership with ShopBack to launch its first precinct-wide cashback programme on ShopBack GO, where consumers who accumulate S$120 spend at participating Kampong Gelam F&B establishments will stand a chance to win $120 in bonus cashback. Another initiative is the official Kampong Gelam WeChat account to encourage tourists to visit the destination and make it easier for them to make purchases there. Merchants will also be able to sell their products online with a dedicated Kampong Gelam e-commerce platform by DEI Holdings.

Alongside these efforts to raise awareness of the precinct and generate business opportunities for merchants, the solutions will also help to:

  • Build customer loyalty to Kampong Gelam merchants by equipping merchants with digital capabilities to attract new customers to their stores and encourage repeat purchases; and
  • Enable merchants to access multiple sales channels by opening up online omni-channels while optimising their physical stores

The new precinct-level initiatives build on Kampong Gelam’s earlier successful digitalisation efforts launched in July 2018 which has already seen more than one-third of the precinct’s merchants adopting digital solutions. While the first round of programmes focused on encouraging merchants to adopt common digital solutions to strengthen their individual competitiveness and connect them to digital platforms, the new set of initiatives will focus on precinct-level digital innovation.

Kampong Gelam Digital Transformation Office (KGDTO)

A new Kampong Gelam Digital Transformation Office (KGDTO) has also been set up to coordinate the efforts of key stakeholders, including the Singapore Malay Chamber of Commerce and Industry (“SMCCI”), One Kampong Gelam (“OKG”), the Infocomm Media Development Authority (“IMDA”) and Enterprise Singapore, and its solution partners.

Mr Farid Khan, President, SMCCI, said: “The Kampong Gelam Digital Transformation Office (KGDTO) is part of a continuous effort by SMCCI to future-proof its businesses. SMCCI aims to use this test-bed within Kampong Gelam to then expand the digital transformation effort across its membership.”

Mr Saeid Labbafi, Chairman, OKG, said: “It is important for Kampong Gelam merchants to leverage on digitalisation efforts, in a technology driven market. Through digitalisation, our unique Kampong Gelam precinct could achieve greater footfall amongst locals and tourists and better business.”

Ms Jane Lim, Assistant Chief Executive, IMDA, said: “It has been encouraging to see merchants taking up digital solutions to strengthen their competitiveness. We are glad to collaborate with SMCCI, OKG, Enterprise Singapore and the private sector, to identify precinct needs and introduce new digital solutions. By working together, we can encourage more people to discover new experiences in Kampong Glam and help our merchants to grow their business.”

Ms Chew Mok Lee, Assistant Chief Executive Officer, Enterprise Singapore, said:  “Beyond increasing productivity, adopting digital solutions, including the use of e-commerce, will enable SMEs to enhance customer interactivity, and access new channels to reach new market segments locally and globally. We will continue to support more industry partners and SMEs to deepen their digitalisation efforts. We look forward to embarking on this digitalisation transformation journey together with Kampong Gelam precinct partners such as SMCCI and the merchants.”
