ONEChallenge Aims to Spot the Next Killer Application

To encourage the creation of innovative broadband services and applications, the National Computer Board (NCB) today launched a first-of-its-kind broadband competition in Singapore. Named ONEChallenge, the competition aims to spot the next generation broadband talents and allows them to test out their ideas and possibly to succeed as local broadband start-ups.

ONEChallenge is open to Singaporeans, permanent residents and residents outside Singapore. Contestants will compete by submitting their ideas on broadband business plans and mock-ups or prototypes. Up for grab is $30,000 in cash for the most innovative broadband idea.

"We believe that the Information Age will be a multimedia one. We encourage creative individuals to push the limits of technology, exploiting the power of Singapore ONE. ONEChallenge is one of our initiatives to position Singapore as a centre for multimedia excellence," said Mr Michael Yap, Chief Executive of NCB.

Mr Yap added, "Our vision is to produce a concentration of talent, activity, ideas, innovation and experimentation surrounding broadband multimedia in Singapore, and establish Singapore as a hotbed for new broadband technology developments."

To help contestants prepare themselves for the competition, the NCB is working closely with the Center for Management of Innovation & Technopreneurship (CMIT) at the National University of Singapore and the Students' Initiative for Technopreneurship (SIFT) at the Nanyang Technological University to organise workshops.

At the workshops, contestants will learn how to translate their innovative broadband ideas into concrete business plans, as well as legal issues pertaining to startups and entrepreneurship. Contestants can also look forward to a chance in receiving valuable feedback from industry experts and potential investment opportunities on their ideas. They can send in questions to online mentors who will be on hand to assist the contestants throughout the competition period.

To move the innovative ideas one step closer to becoming actual applications or services that can be deployed over the nationwide broadband network, Singapore ONE, winners will be referred to relevant grant schemes, venture capitalists, and angels if they wish to start up their winning ideas.

Registration for the competition opens on 21st October 1999, and closes on 31st December 1999. Contestants can either form teams or register as an individual. All registrations must be submitted online. Contestants are expected to submit their business plans and mock-ups or prototypes by 15 January 2000. Short-listed entries will need to be presented to a panel of judges in Singapore. Panelists will include venture capitalists and industry captains.

The results of the competition will be announced in March 2000. For more information on the competition, visit the competition website at http://www.onechallenge.com.
