1. More than 16,000 workers have gone through the IT familiarisation programme on the IT Coach since it was launched more than a year ago. The workers were taught the benefits of IT services, the basics of the Internet, and the use of digital cameras in a 45-minute programme which is designed to be interactive and easy to understand.
2. Information collected from these 16,000 workers, covering production operators, technicians, chefs, and other service personnel, indicated that 40% have taken positive follow-up actions. They have either bought a computer, signed up for computer-related courses, or have taken up a subscription for Internet.
3. Building on the encouraging response, the IT Coach will be re-launched by Mr David Lim, Minister of State for Defence; Information and the Arts, on 26 June 1999, 3pm, at the opening of the Singapore ONE Club at the Changi Simei Community Centre. The IT Coach will offer a new 30-minute programme that includes Singapore ONE content. The programme would also take on themes such as electronic commerce or Chinese Internet when the IT Coach visits different locations. The IT Coach will continue to reach out to the non-IT savvy and its reach will be extended to shopping malls, technical institutions, offices and even holiday resorts.
4. "Our objective is to bring IT within reach, in terms of distance and costs. As the IT Coach is a mobile IT resource, it will be able to bring IT to the doorsteps of Singaporeans. The IT Coach also complements our other initiatives to make IT training affordable for all." says Mrs Pam Soh, Deputy Director, IT Culture and Lifestyle at the National Computer Board (NCB). The various initiatives include mass training events such as Surf@Stadium and ONE Camp, and a permanent Singapore ONE training centre called ONE Learning Place. Mrs Soh added, "By familiarising more Singaporeans to IT, the NCB aims to encourage even more to embrace IT and to take up IT training."
5. The IT Coach is equipped with 11 multimedia personal computers. Tools such as the pen input device, smart-card reader, and video-conferencing kit are also put in place on each of the computers to allow visitors to experience the benefits of IT and Singapore ONE.
6. Each participant of the IT Coach familiarisation programme will receive a copy of ONE Click - a resource guide which provides basic and essential information about Singapore ONE and the Internet. In addition, they will also enjoy discounts when they attend training at ONE Learning Place.
