New Delhi, India, 1 November 2000 - To promote closer link between the new economy sectors of Singapore and India, the Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore (IDA) and the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) at an industry forum in New Delhi. This is in line with IDA's goal of fostering strategic partnership and alliance with overseas industry partners.

IDA recognises that India has world-class IT professionals, software solutions, technical know-how, IT enabled services and a rapidly growing domestic market for infocomm services that Singapore business can tap on. Singapore, with a pro-business environment coupled with a world-class infocomm infrastructure and highly skilled and IT savvy workforce, provides a supportive environment to Indian businesses.

Miss Yong Ying-I, Chief Executive Officer of IDA said, "Singapore and India have a history of strong trading links strengthened by social and cultural ties. With global developments rapidly shaping the new economy sectors, both countries can draw on its existing strengths and ties to foster a new form of partnership to take on the challenges of the New Economy. We believe that companies in both countries would certainly welcome the opportunities for exponential growth to be expected from our strengthened ties and partnership."

Mr Tarun Das, Director General of CII said, "India, especially Corporate India, attaches a lot of significance to its relationship with Singapore. The new economy linkages between the two Asian IT leaders, present an exciting opportunity to companies, institutions, and individuals."

Some of the activities outlined in the MOU include: a) setting up a joint task force comprising industry representatives and secretariat staff; b) promoting and facilitating institutional co-operation among government bodies, research establishments, training institutes and the private sectors; c) supporting seminars, conferences, events, trade fairs and business missions in both countries;

There are also plans to set up business centres in India and Singapore to facilitate the start-up process for companies in both countries. In fact, CII is working on bringing Indian CEOs to Singapore in December 2000. This CEO mission will be led by the President of CII, Mr Arun Bharat Ram.
