Singapore, 26 April 2000 | For Immediate Release

The Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore (IDA) has released a consultation paper today to invite views from the industry and members of the public. Entitled "Proposed Advisory Guidelines on Advertising in Singapore for the Telecommunication Industry", the consultation paper seeks comments on the proposed advisory guidelines on advertising by telecommunication operators.

In view that full market liberalisation will continue to attract new telecommunication players, and that advertising will continue to play an important role in the promotion of products and services in this increasingly competitive environment, IDA recognises the need to set some guidelines for advertising. While advertisements help create brand identity and awareness, as well as inform and educate consumers of products and services available in the market, malpractices in advertising may be potentially harmful to the industry. If left unchecked, certain advertisements may confuse and mislead consumers about products and services being offered. This may eventually bring disrepute to the overall image of the telecommunication industry.

The issuance of this consultation paper is part of IDA's on-going efforts to provide a platform for industry members to share their views on the appropriate regulatory frameworks to be put in place, taking into account industry trends and developments.

All views and comments should be submitted in writing to reach IDA on or before 12 noon, 10 May 2000. Based on the comments received, IDA will make the appropriate modifications to the proposed Guidelines, which are targeted to be issued by second quarter 2000.

The consultation paper may be downloaded from the "Policy & Regulation" section of the IDA website at www.imda.gov.sg.
