e-Celebrations Singapore 2001 kick starts a 5-week extravaganza to bring the e-lifestyle to the people

Give Singaporeans the impetus to discover their potential through an e-lifestyle - that's what e-Celebrations Singapore will focus on this year.

Back for a second installment, the 5-week long islandwide extravaganza, spearheaded by the Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore (IDA) returns with greater emphasis on moving people from awareness to adoption.

Last year's inaugural e-Celebrations Singapore served to build awareness and interest in an e-lifestyle amongst Singaporeans. This year, the activities are designed to move people from awareness to adoption through imparting the 4Es to Singaporeans - e-Transactions, e-Learning, e-Entertainment, and e-Communications.

"In an age where the ability to source for, and manage information effectively has become essential, a reliance on the 3Rs - reading, writing and arithmetic is no longer adequate. Singaporeans need to discover their potential in an online world to acquire a new economy savviness that will keep them relevant and hence, competitive in a fast evolving environment," said Dr Kaizad Heerjee, IDA's Assistant Chief Executive for Online Development.

He added: "Singapore is off to a good start as a connected city with 99% of the nation wired up with broadband. With the foundation in place, we want to provide the earliest exposure to Singaporeans, through the most relevant and accessible channels. e-Celebrations Singapore makes an excellent bridge between e-lifestyle drivers and the people."

This five-week series of events held between 7 March to 12 April features 61 partners from the private sector, government sector and the community. A total of 95 events ranging from thematic fairs, competitions, training workshops to community programmes, will be targeted at helping Singaporeans attain the 4Es by embracing an e-lifestyle.

Through e-Celebrations Singapore 2001, IDA seeks to reach out to workers, homemakers, senior citizens and the disabled. These are segments of the population who may be aware of the benefits of technology and the e-lifestyle but need active encouragement, to graduate beyond mere awareness towards firm adoption, in order to reap the maximum benefits.

It is estimated that the e-Celebrations Singapore 2001 will reach out to 500,000 participants during the next five weeks. There is a myriad of activities in store, aimed at providing equal opportunity for all Singaporeans to achieve the 4Es regardless of income, education or language barriers.

Dr Heerjee added, "All around the world, an e-Lifestyle is empowering people, bridging lives and closing divides. IDA would like to take this opportunity to invite all Singaporeans, from the private and government sectors, community groups, the media and the general public to participate in e-Celebrations Singapore 2001 enthusiastically. To be well-equipped in handling the challenges of the New Economy, we've got to be connected."

e-Celebrations Singapore will be launched officially on 7 March, in conjunction with the opening of e-Festival Asia 2001, the anchor event of e-Celebrations Singapore. e-Festival Asia 2001 will showcase the best in interactive products and services from 40 exhibitors from March 7-11 at the Singapore International Convention and Exhibition Centre.
