NIC 2008 Offers Next-Generation Challenges, Goes International

In conjunction with the 2007 NIC awards, the IDA, together with MOE, schools and the industry, now call for the participation of students in the 2008 NIC.

This year, the NIC challenges are focused on business IT, digital media, mobile technology, security and networking, in line with future infocomm growth areas. Some 2,500 infocomm students of Secondary Schools, Junior Colleges, ITE and Polytechnics are expected to come forward to compete once again in the NIC.

Into its third year, NIC 2008 has expanded to offer more next-generation infocomm technologies in the challenges, including interactive digital media, programming and Web 2.0 applications. In addition, the winners will have the opportunity to represent Singapore in other regional and international infocomm competitions. For instance, the winners of one of the NIC challenges, the Splash Awards 2008, will enter automatically into the semi-finals of the Imagine Cup 2008 . Winners of the 11th National Olympiad In Informatics will represent Singapore in the International Olympiad in Informatics.

As with previous NICs, the students will compete in three circuits: (a) Seconday School, (b) Junior College (JC) and (c) Polytechnic / ITE over 12 challenges this year. Out of these 12, four are new ones, such as X-site which is an educational website design competition, and Schools Digital Media Awards for students to express creatively through the video, audio and animation. Points will be awarded to the top winners in each challenge. The school with the highest accumulated points will be the circuit champion.  (Please see Annex B (14.81KB)  for an overview of the NIC 2008 and Factsheets of the challenges).

Mr Leong Keng Thai, Deputy Chief Executive and Director-General (Telecoms), Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore (IDA) said,” We are raising the bar in this year’s NIC to challenge our students to use next-generation infocomm technologies to solve industry-related competitions. I am confident these students will do well, to become Singapore’s pipeline of infocomm talent, who needs to stay relevant in the fast-changing infocomm scene.”

The NIC is part of the Student Outreach Programme under IDA’s Infocomm Manpower Development Roadmap. This Roadmap is one of the foundational pillars of the iN2015 masterplan to drive Singapore’s efforts to develop an infocomm-savvy workforce and globally competitive infocomm manpower to drive national economic competitiveness.

Supported by MOE, the NIC is organised by IDA and the following organisations including National Technological University, National University of Singapore, Singapore Institute of Management, Singapore Management University, Ngee Ann Polytechnic, Nanyang Polytechnic, Republic Polytechnic, Singapore Polytechnic, Temasek Polytechnic, ITE, Information Technology Standards Committee, Singapore Computer Society and Science Centre Singapore.  The industry partners include Adobe, Microsoft and Sun Microsystems.
