Discovering New Possibilities with Next Gen Infocomm Services

The Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore (IDA) today launched the Infocomm Experience Centre (iExperience), to showcase possibilities and benefits of Next Generation (Next Gen) services to the public and businesses. Located at the Esplanade Xchange, the centre comprises interactive and engaging exhibits designed to educate and excite visitors through a hands-on experience.

Highlights of Key Exhibits

Four major themes surround the 435-square metre iExperience, which relate closely to our daily lives in the areas of live, work, learn and interact. There are also fun exhibits located within the centre which visitors can "play" with.

Live
As homes get ready to be connected to the Next Gen Nationwide Broadband Network (Next Gen NBN), everyone at home will be able to access media-rich applications such as personalised healthcare, remote learning and interactive Internet Protocol television (IPTV) services. Taking digital healthcare as an example, interaction with the doctor can be more convenient as physicians are able to remotely monitor an individual's health. With IPTV, a multitude of applications and services are conveniently made available through the television. Access to common e-government services such as renewing your car license and watching your favourite programme on-demand in 3D, are just some of the infinite possibilities.

Work
This area demonstrates how businesses from different industries can leverage on Next Gen NBN to enhance their services and achieve greater productivity and efficiency. Real-time collaboration is possible through telepresence and HD video conferencing solutions, enabling real-time and life-like face-to-face communication with colleagues, partners and customers anywhere around the world. Surveillance monitoring of offsite facilities for operational and security concerns can also be managed remotely through the HD remote monitoring application. Through cloud and grid computing, enterprises are able to share computing resources and enjoy a wider range of IT services at lower cost.

Learn
The Learn area features a mock-up of a future classroom which demonstrates the use of interactive learning solutions such as classroom management system and learning management system. These solutions are currently being trialled in the FutureSchools@Singapore programme. The FutureSchools@Singapore programme, is made up of a selection of six schools as the pioneer batch to serve as peaks of excellence in enabling school-wide transformation of learning and teaching through infocomm.

Through the use of such solutions, learners can collaborate and learn from a wide range of rich digital media resources anytime, anywhere. Teachers can tap on edumall2.0, a gateway where they can access quality teaching resources to enhance learning. Teachers and parents can also communicate effectively about students' progress and performance.

Interact
Another interactive application which enhances your retail experience is the Smart Kiosk, which allows consumers to virtually select and try on cosmetic products in the store. The Smart Kiosk captures an image of the consumer and provides product information such as the price and where to purchase the product, all directly to the consumer's mobile phone or email upon their choices and selections.

iExperience, Discovering New Possibilities

Infocomm Experience Centre (iExperience) aims to give every visitor a personal experience to discover new possibilities enabled by Next Gen infocomm services. The 'i' in the logo stands for infocomm, and is designed to represent the shape of a human, highlighting the gallery's purpose of reaching out to people and imbuing a human element to technology. The 'nodes' in the logo design represent the theme of connection to tie back to the innovative and Next Gen enabled products and services that are being showcased.

iExperience is located at the linkway between Raffles City and Suntec City. Its central location and proximity to offices and malls in the area makes it easily accessible to the public. Exhibits will be updated regularly so that visitors will enjoy different experiences each time they visit the centre. Going forward, iExperience will also go beyond the Next Gen NBN to showcase more next gen technologies.

RADM(NS) Ronnie Tay, CEO, IDA said: "Visitors to the Infocomm Experience Centre, or iExperience, can try out the many exhibits there and discover the infinite possibilities brought about by innovation in infocomm. The range of engaging and interactive exhibits on display relates closely to our daily lives, in the way we live, work, learn and interact. Visitors will get a good sense of the exciting Next Generation services they can look forward to, now and in the future."

Important Dates

The iExperience will be open to the public from 1 July 2010 onwards. Admission into the centre is free. To qualify for a preview tour of iExperience before 1 July, public can email to iexperience@imda.gov.sg to share their ideas on what they would like to see at the iExperience.
