Nation-wide "Can't Live Without Tech!" Contest Launched

To encourage students to find out more about infocomm and an education in infocomm, a nation-wide contest "Can't Live Without Tech!" has been launched. Students can participate by submitting a 1-minute video that showcases the importance of technology in their lives, along with a short description. The contest will run from 11 November 2011 to 15 January 2012, and is organised by the Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore (IDA) and the Interactive Digital Media (IDM) Chapter of the Singapore Computer Society (SCS). (For details on "Can't Live Without Tech!", please refer to Annex A (27.25KB)).

Announced by Senior Minister of State for Information, Communications and the Arts, Ms Grace Fu, at the Youth Infocomm Day (YID) 2011, the social media contest supports the Infocomm Manpower Development Roadmap Version 2.0 (MDEV 2.0) strategy to "generate curiosity, interest and passion for infocomm". The main objective of the contest is to inject vibrancy into the infocomm student online community, where students can come together, exchange creative ideas and fuel their passion for infocomm.

Nearly 500 students and teachers from Infocomm Clubs in Primary Schools, Secondary Schools and Junior Colleges celebrated infocomm in carnival-style at YID 2011.

MDEV 2.0 was first launched in March 2011 with the aim to ensure that Singapore's infocomm manpower continues to remain competitive with the developments in the industry globally and within Singapore. A joint effort between the government and industry, MDEV 2.0 seeks to develop talent with deep infocomm skills, ability to exploit infocomm and agility to respond to industry shifts. Through its initiatives and programmes, MDEV 2.0 will benefit more than 18,000 infocomm professionals and school students in Singapore. (For details on MDEV 2.0, please refer to Annex B (41.98KB)).

One such initiative is the Infocomm Club Programme, a Co-Curricular Activity (CCA) for primary, secondary and junior college students. As part of this programme, 20 new Youth Infocomm Ambassadors have been appointed this year. They will act as student leaders, representing the voice of the infocomm student community. Another is the Computer Science Reloaded Programme (CS Reloaded) where 210 students have been supported in enrichment computer science courses. The IT Exposed programme has also benefitted 595 students who have attended introductory workshops on programming and application development, exposing them to computing concepts and technologies. In addition, the first batch of the IDA JC Computing Awards will be presented in 2012, with an estimated 100 awards to be given out over four years. (For details on MDEV 2.0 student-related initiatives and programmes, please refer to Annex C (26.74KB)to Annex G (33.63KB))
