Singapore, 6 April 2011 | For Immediate Release

3,000 Students from Secondary Schools, Junior Colleges, ITE and Polytechnics Took Part in NIC 2010

Winners from two National Infocomm Competition ("NIC") Challenges, the National Olympiad in Informatics ("NOI") and the Imagine Cup 2010, represented Singapore at the international rounds, clinching top positions.  The NIC is an initiative by the Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore ("IDA") to generate curiosity, interest and passion amongst students.

Singapore walked away with one gold medal, one silver medal and two bronze medals from the International Olympiad in Informatics ("IOI"), the international round of the NOI, held in August 2010 in Ontario, Canada.  Gold medallist, Raymond Kang from Raffles Institution obtained 22nd position out of 300 competitors in the IOI by performing ten programming tasks over two days.  A silver medal was also awarded to Chin Zhan Xiong from Raffles Institution (26th position).  Two bronze medals went to Shen Chuanqi from Raffles Institution and Daniel Wong from Hwa Chong Institution (124th and 132nd position respectively).  These students were part of the teams that top positions in the Secondary School and JC circuits of NIC 2009.

Singapore teams, which topped the local round of the Imagine Cup 2010, had also performed well at the Worldwide Finals in Poland, Warsaw, held in July 2010.  Hu Zhengbin, from this year's NIC ITE/Poly category winner, Nanyang Polytechnic, won third place in the "IT Challenge" category.  Temasek Polytechnic, 2nd position in the NIC ITE/Poly category of NIC 2010, were also amongst the top six amongst 68 countries for the "Software Design" category, the most coveted category of the Imagine Cup.  The team prepared an application that leveraged on SMS technology to connect teachers in under-developed parts of the world such as Africa with teachers in developed countries so that they could seek help and resources that would enable them to teach better.  Team Woolgathering from Singapore Polytechnic came in third in the "Digital Media" category.

This year, winning teams from the National Olympiad in Informatics and Imagine Cup 2011: Software Design, will once again represent Singapore in July 2011 to compete at the 23rd IOI in Pattaya City Thailand and the Imagine Cup 2011 at New York City, USA, respectively.

Mr Sam Tan, Senior Parliamentary Secretary of the Information, Communications and the Arts, officially launched the NIC 2011 at the Red Dot Museum today, and presented prizes to the winners of the NIC 2010 (See Annex A, Appendix 1 for the full list of NIC 2010 winners).  These winning NIC 2010 teams will be provided with a prize of a one week knowledge acquisition trip to Silicon Valley, USA.  Last year, NIC winners had visited companies like Apple, HP Labs, LucasFilm and Microsoft to learn first-hand from infocomm professionals in Silicon Valley about working in the infocomm industry.

A total of about 3,000 students from secondary schools, junior colleges, ITE and polytechnics took part in 15 challenges within the NIC in 2010 aimed at generating greater awareness and excitement among students and the public, with the intent to attract young talent to the infocomm industry.
