ITA Oman and IDA Singapore Collaborate To Strengthen Oman’s Adoption Of Infocomm Technology To Advance The Education Sector

27 March 2013 - The Information Technology Authority of Oman (ITA) and Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore (IDA) today strengthened its collaboration in infocomm technology (ICT) for the education sector in Oman through a joint eEducation seminar, alongside of the COMEX 2013 ICT exhibition.

Singapore, 27 March 2013 | For Immediate Release

The Information Technology Authority of Oman (ITA) and Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore (IDA) today strengthened its collaboration in infocomm technology (ICT) for the education sector in Oman through a joint eEducation seminar, alongside of the COMEX 2013 ICT exhibition. The eEducation seminar is aimed at offering an information platform on how technology can support academic approaches and enrich the learning environment for students and teachers.

Six Singaporean ICT companies and the Nanyang Technological University (NTU) were present to share their project implementation experience, to discuss benefits of eLearning programmes and showcase how ICT adoption can potentially be made by educational institutions. These companies included GSA Pte Ltd, Heulab Pte Ltd, IDA international Pte Ltd, Inspire-Tech Pte Ltd, LDR Pte Ltd and LittleLives Inc Pte Ltd. Each company specialises in ICT products and services that have been successfully adopted by the education sector in Singapore and other international markets. Moreover, Oman's Ministry of Education and various senior executives from ITA contributed to the seminar's panel and keynote sessions. While IDA shared its ICT Education and Learning Plan, which was developed under Singapore's Intelligent Nation 2015 Masterplan (iN2015).

Mr Ronnie Tay, Chief Executive Officer, Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore said, "Educational institutions all over the world are actively looking to leveraging ICT to better equip their students and teachers for a learner-centric environment. In Singapore, we have the "EdVantage" programme which was implemented to meet the diverse needs of learners through the innovative use of infocomm. We are pleased to have the opportunity to discuss and exchange ideas with ITA on the use of ICT to strengthen the education sector."

Dr Salim Sultan Al Ruzaiqui, Chief Executive Officer, Information Technology Authority of Oman added, "Recognising the need to elevate the country through education and learning technology, Oman has been working closely with Singapore to exchange experiences in the collaboration of ICT. This joint seminar is an example of how both countries can strengthen Oman's adoption of ICT for the education sector through knowledge sharing. Singapore's eEducation programmes can serve as a guide along with other worldwide experiences in inculcating practices and promotions of ICT innovation for schools, teachers and students in Oman."

IDA's ICT initiatives across the different sectors are guided by iN2015, aimed to navigate Singapore's transition into "An Intelligent Nation, A Global City, Powered By Infocomm". By showcasing the sectoral possibilities enabled through ICT to international markets, IDA provides thought leadership from their local programmes. For example, EdVantage is the flagship programme aligned with Singapore's Ministry of Education's Masterplan for adopting ICT to enhance education. EdVantage bases its initiatives on three core programmes including:

  • FutureSchools@Singapore: Whole-school transformation of exemplary schools;
  • Experimentation@Schools: Ground-up innovations from pilot schools;
  • Infocomm@AllSchools: Mass Deployment to schools.

An extended Memorandum of Understanding was signed between ITA and IDA in November 2011, to collaborate on various aspects of ICT in government and various economic sectors such as education. Both parties will continue with the experience and knowledge sharing in this collaboration on ICT, and explore co-operation on projects which will be implemented by both the public and private sectors.

The COMEX 2013 ICT exhibition takes place from 25th – 29th March 2013 at the Oman International Exhibition Centre in Muscat. A trade delegation of Singapore ICT companies and the NTU will be showcasing their products and services under the Infocomm Singapore pavilion. COMEX offers the latest IT solutions and a wide-range of opportunities to visitors and delegates interested in new innovative solutions to boost their business, marketing and industry development.
