Singapore, 30 March | For Immediate Release

Bringing together a unique cohort of students from 10 to 80 years old, the North East Eldersurf Intergen Bootcamp is an unusual way for seniors to learn IT. Over 370 seniors benefitted from this five-month bootcamp that concluded today.

Students from 17 schools turned cyber-guides to help seniors learn basic computer skills. Besides learning how to use the keyboard and mouse, the seniors also learnt about the Internet, how to use Email and watch videos online. For the first time, part of the curriculum also included the use of POSB’s self-service banking and SMS banking services which have been customised to make banking transactions easier for seniors.

Jointly organised by the Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore (IDA), North-East Community Development Council (CDC) and POSB, each senior attended five sessions of the 3-hour IT workshops conducted by professional trainers in either English or Mandarin.

Ms. Jacqueline Poh, Managing Director, IDA said, “As our society gets increasingly digitized, more transactions and information will be consumed online. Everyone in the community can play their part in helping seniors integrate into this evolving digital community, so they too can take advantage of the tools and information available online.”

A resident from the North East District, 63-years-old, Mr. Tan Chew Seng said, “I feel this course is beneficial as I learned how to use the computer, access the internet and send email. These young cyber-guides have helped me to understand the difficult technical terms and made this learning journey fun and enjoyable.”

Ms. Susan Cheong, Head of POSB said, “We are delighted to be involved in this meaningful initiative. As the ‘People’s Bank’, we aim to build a more inclusive society by ensuring that our services are easy to use while taking into account the needs of our customers. We feel that it is important to get our seniors digitally connected and take full advantage of POSB’s suite of digital banking services so as to enjoy greater convenience.”
