Ladies and gentlemen,
Good afternoon.
Introduction
1. As one of the challenges under Singapore’s largest National Infocomm Competition (or NIC for short), it gives me great pleasure to be here today to witness the finals of ALICE-in-Action challenge. My congratulations to all students who made it today. And my heartfelt thanks and appreciation to Temasek Poly, in particular, Ms Lim Sok Keow and her team, for their efforts in making this possible.
2. I hope all the participants have had FUN creating interactive, entertaining and engaging 3D animations in bringing your stories to life.
From Interactive Animation To An Intelligent Nation
3. Participating in competitions like this will enable you to acquire a variety of useful skills. One of these skills is the use of object-oriented programming tools in the ALICE software to create objects’ movements and gesture to perform complex actions in the 3D environment. Also, you would have learned to incorporate voice, audio and music effects and apply other skills such as story-telling, teamwork and communications.
4. The knowledge, skills and experience which you have obtained are invaluable. I am certain they can be applied extensively in your future career. Imagine developing a new software used in F1 racing; creating an online game played by millions; or making an Oscar award-winning animated movie. In the infocomm world, you are only limited by your own imagination!
5. In our Prime Minister’s recent National Day Message, he emphasised the importance of the Internet and the power it has, in transforming economies and societies. It will change the way we live, learn, work and play.
6. As PM Lee rightly pointed out - we will have to evolve our policies, rules, economy and society to take full advantage of new technology developments. In fact, we are already seeing the strong uptrend growth of the infocomm industry over the last six years.
7. In 2007 alone, Singapore’s infocomm industry saw revenues grow almost 14 per cent to reach S$52 billion. Our infocomm employment rate also achieved a record high (of almost 9 per cent growth with an infocomm talent pool of 130,000 last year). Job opportunities in infocomm are promising and they vary in areas such as technology research and development, digital media, web development, infocomm security, infocomm consultancy and project management.
8. This is not an extensive list, of course. The need for infocomm talent extends beyond the infocomm industry, to other key sectors such as healthcare, hospitality, finance, logistics and transport. Those who have the expertise to capitalise on infocomm technology innovatively to transform Singapore’s economy and society will be much sought after.

9. The career prospects for infocomm professionals are bright. For those of you who have taken part in today’s challenge, I urge you to pursue your passion, consider an infocomm-related course and be a player in this dynamic industry. The future is infocomm.
