Hotels and Selected Educational Institutions Can Now Install TV Receive-Only (TVRO) Satellite System

Dated: 20 June 2003

The Media Development Authority (MDA) has refined its Satellite TV policy to allow hotels, tertiary and international educational institutions to install TV Receive-Only (TVRO) Satellite Systems. This is an extension of its existing policy which allows the installation of TVRO Satellite Systems by companies, embassies, and institutions that require time-sensitive business or market information. The restriction on satellite dishes in households will continue, to prevent the in-flow of undesirable contents that are at odds with Singapore's multi-racial and multi-religious society.

Hotels, with the support of the Singapore Tourism Board, can install TVRO dishes upon approval by MDA. Similarly, tertiary and international educational institutions endorsed by the Economic Development Board can also install TVRO dishes upon approval by MDA. Interested parties may apply for a licence to subscribe directly to the services of satellite TV operators or engage the services of an authorised pay TV operator in Singapore to receive satellite TV services.

MDA's decision will enable hotels to offer a competing range of entertainment choices befitting Singapore's aspirations to be a world-class tourism destination and facilitate access by tertiary and international educational institutions to media resources for education and research purposes. In coming to this decision, MDA considered the Economic Review Committee's recommendations to encourage the growth of Singapore's services sector.
