Turning passion for nature into business

Dated: 9 May 2003

The Media Development Authority (MDA) has commissioned a three-part documentary series entitled Nature's Call on MediaCorp's Channel 8. The programme features individuals who turn their love for Mother Nature into business ventures.

Sutari Supari is always seen in his bermudas and T-shirt, leading tour groups into the wilderness of Malaysia. He brings Singaporeans on bird watching and expeditions through thick forest and meandering rivers. He can mimic calls of different species of birds and even communicate with them. But who would have guess that Supari used to study advertising art and was once a police constable!

Husband-and-wife team, Ivy-Singh Lim and Lim Ho Seng, can often be spotted tilling their farm and reaping their labour of love. But it was a conscious decision which they made. The couple gave up their pursuit of material comforts to start their organic farm. And there is Pan Hui Yi who founded Orchidville and worked hard to transform his company into Singapore's largest Orchid farm exporter. Wong Kok Fah also shares his story of how he struggled to set up a farm to grow aloe vera and ginseng in Singapore.

The programme finds out what inspires all these men and women to abandon their previous high-flying careers to go back to the basics. What sacrifices did they have to make and how did they translate their interest for nature into business opportunities?

Ms Amy Chua, MDA's Director of Media Content said, "It is heartwarming to learn that, in a highly urbanised society like ours, there are people who can successfully marry their love for nature with work. Hopefully, viewers can gain invaluable insights to this new breed of entrepreneurs".

Mr Khiew Voon Kwang, Senior Vice-President of MediaCorp TV Programming and Promotions said, "This programme shares with viewers our little secret in Singapore there is a thriving agro/nature related business despite our limited land size and highly urbanised society. Channel 8 is proud to work with Media Development Authority on another quality programme."

The series will make its debut on 10 May 2003, every Saturday from 7.00 pm to 7.30 pm.
