Dated: 15 January 2004

New Singapore Original Animation Categories in ComGraph 2004 created in partnership with the Media Development Authority

Singapore, January 15, 2004 - Think you can create the next Nemo, Shrek or Gollum? Here's your chance to prove it. Enter the 5th Asia Pacific Digital Art and Animation Competition, and show the world just what you've got to be the next worldclass animator. Your work may well make it bigtime internationally with the help of the Media Development Authority (MDA) and the SIGGRAPH Singapore Chapter.

Both today announced the creation of the Singapore Original Animation categories for ComGraph 2004: 5th Asia Pacific Digital Art and Animation Competition and the call for entries for the competition. This event recognises outstanding digital art and animation works and is open to participants in the Asia Pacific region. Students, professionals from production companies and advertising agencies, as well as individuals who are interested in computer graphics are encouraged to take part.

ComGraph 2004 is inviting submission of entries to the following five categories:
1. Singapore Original Animation (Open), NEW
2. Singapore Original Animation (Student), NEW
3. Computer Animation (Open)
4. Computer Animation (Student)
5. Digital Art (theme: Fantasy)

The highlights of this year's competition are the new Singapore Original Animation categories created in partnership with the MDA, in which participants are invited to submit original short animation works incorporating original characters and storylines that can be further developed into an animated TV series or feature film.

The new categories are open to all Singaporeans and Permanent Residents. This is aimed at encouraging the creation of original animation content in Singapore, giving exposure to "Made-by-Singapore" original animation content and promoting the growth of local talent in original animation production.

Winners stand to win attractive cash prizes totalling $15,000 sponsored by the MDA. The winning computer animation works in the Singapore Original Animation category will stand a chance to be produced into an animation pilot. This is the first step towards the production of a complete animation series that may eventually be broadcast internationally.

Mr Lim Hock Chuan, MDA's Chief Executive Officer, explains why the MDA is supporting ComGraph. "We see great potential for digital media and animation in Singapore. The ComGraph competition is an excellent platform for animation and digital media talents to showcase their works. Supporting these talents is part of our strategy of growing the local media industry and developing Singapore into a global media city. We hope that the new Singapore Original Animation categories in the competition will encourage the development of original animation content in Singapore. If we can develop local Made-by-Singapore content for international audiences, our local media industry will grow further beyond the limitations of our market size."

Added SIGGRAPH Chairman, Dr Seah Hock Soon, "We are happy to be able to work hand-in-hand with MDA to expand the potential of the Singapore's digital media industry through ComGraph. With new directions and initiatives, ComGraph 2004 will certainly add excitement to the regional computer graphics scene."
