Singapore All Set To Break Into Leading Chinese TV Market With 3G And HD Content

Dated: 10 June 2005

The Media Development Authority (MDA) will be leading 11 media companies to the Shanghai Television Festival (STVF), Film &TV Market, from 12 to 14 June. This is the second year the MDA and the Singapore industry are showcasing made-by-Singapore programmes at this leading Chinese TV market. Singapore will be highlighting six programmes in particular, one of which was filmed in hi-definition (HD) format and another using 3G technology.

As Asia’s first-of-its-kind Chinese 3G mobile drama, P.S … I Luv U (天...使我爱你), will make its debut at STVF. This is the first Chinese drama that is released on mobile phones even before it hits free-to-air TV or the video market. A collaboration between MediaCorp Singapore and the MDA, this 30 episode x 3 minutes drama series showcasing popular Asian idols Chen Yi Rong (陈怡蓉) and Qiu Zhe (邱泽), marks Singapore’s foray into new media productions that is set to open new markets.

The exciting lineup of programmes also includes Love Misplaced, Singapore’s first co-production shot in HD format. A co-production deal sealed between Singapore film company One Take Production Pte Ltd and China’s Xi’an Film Studio, this 20-episode drama series is currently shown on China’s Western Movie Channel in Shanxi. The series will also be distributed by CiTV to the rest of China.

The other programmes that will be featured at STVF range from TV dramas to children’s programmes, including House of Harmony (drama), Chase (drama), Dancing Notes (children’s) and Marco Polo Kids (children’s).

Commenting on the significance of Singapore’s participation at the STVF Film &TV Market, Mr Seto Lok Yin, Director of Industry Development at the MDA said, “Over the past two months, our TV producers, film-makers and production companies have made headlines in international markets such as MIPTV and the Cannes Film Market in France.

“We're very encouraged that our Made-by-Singapore content is well received by the international markets and that our Singapore companies are also keeping ahead of trends by exploiting opportunities made available through new technology such as HD and 3G.”

The Singapore contingent comprises Asian Food Channel, Bruce Dunlop and Associates Singapore, Freeman Productions, GR8HT, Infinite Frameworks, Matrix Vision, MediaCorp Group, One Take Production, Oak 3 Films, Sitting in Pictures, Yellowstone Productions and the MDA.

The Singapore pavilion is located at A28, Hall 2, at the Shanghai New International Expo Centre.
