Mobile TV, IPTV and HDTV take centrestage at dedicated technology showcase
Companies at the Singapore Pavilion will showcase the latest services, applications and tools enabled by digital convergence in the areas of Mobile Broadcasting and Internet Protocol Television (IPTV), alongside new equipment and devices enabling High Definition Television (HDTV). In addition, eight companies at the Pavilion are set to unveil at BroadcastAsia the latest prototypes and concept ideas developed under the Media Development Authority of Singapore’s (MDA) Digital Technology Development Scheme (DTDS) that provides funding support for the development of original and innovative products or concepts.
Themed “New Digital Media Landscape”, the 1,000 square-metre Singapore Pavilion is the largest-ever and brings together a record 41 digital multimedia companies demonstrating the latest made-by-Singapore technologies.
The showcase of Mobile Broadcasting, IPTV and HDTV will take centrestage at the Singapore Pavilion. This specialty exhibit will also feature exciting applications in Interactive and Digital Media (IDM) research and development, including Singapore company Sparky Animation’s leading crowd animation software that creates animation crowd with a remarkable level of realism. A recipient of funding schemes established under Government’s push to invest in IDM as a key driver of growth, Sparky Animation will be showcasing a suite of animation tools that can generate individualised characters with a great variety of personal appearances and at the same time, produce impressive crowd sequences with a vast array of complex actions.
Dr Christopher Chia, MDA’s Chief Executive Officer said: “TV services are no longer delivered through traditional means alone. With digital convergence, media content is increasingly being provided through IPTV and mobile platforms as well, thereby creating more choices and entertainment options for viewers. The technologies and solutions showcased by the Singapore companies reflect the new thinking in the digital media landscape.”

Following the roll-out of HDTV and the start of mobile broadcasting trials in Singapore, we are increasingly being recognised as a testbed for cutting-edge technologies by companies wishing to enter new markets both in the region and globally,” added Dr Chia.
On-the-move TV services
New ways of distributing content such as the delivery of digital TV services to mobile phones, PDAs and other mobile devices are rapidly creating further opportunities for innovation and growth.
In Singapore, three trial licences were issued last year enabling PGK Media, GoMobile and Innoxious Technologies to test technical and commercial parameters to provide mobile TV services.
PGK Media has since developed an array of Mobile Broadcasting solutions such as ‘Picture Radio’, the first-of-its-kind Multiband Multimedia Digital Radio that is able to receive terrestrial signals via Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB), Terrestrial-Digital Multimedia Broadcasting (T-DMB) and Digital Video Broadcasting-Terrestrial (DVB-T) platforms. Its flat screen allows users to view live digital TV and multimedia on the go.
GoMobile will display its latest core software development with built-in encryption to deliver live TV, DAB and data services securely to mobile users through multiple platforms such as Digital Video Broadcasting-Handheld (DVB-H) technology, DAB and telecommunications networks.
The third company, Innoxius Technologies, will be showcasing a mini DVB-H base station, an innovative indoor Mobile Broadcasting solution that is designed to be integrated into existing Internet Protocol broadband infrastructure for easy and cost efficient deployment by the Internet operators.
IPTV Showcase
Partnering SingTel, Alcatel-Lucent will give a sneak preview on the latest innovative IPTV technology and applications that will be deployed on SingTel’s IPTV platform at the Singapore Pavilion showcase area.
HDTV Showcase
There will also be a HDTV Showcase with state-of-the-art HD equipment. Key exhibits include Samsung’s IDTV M8 which has the world’s first built-in MPEG4 AVC (H.264) HD Decoder and DVB-T Tuner Integrated Digital Television (iDTV). HD content from MediaCorp, Discovery, National Geographic and Voom HD Networks will be telecasted on the HDTV sets, along with MDA-commissioned made-by-Singapore content.
Other technologies on display include innovative solutions and applications funded through the DTDS. MDA has also supported the following Singapore digital media technology companies which will be showcasing their latest products and services at the Singapore Pavilion;Skycom Satellite System (HD set-top boxes), Now Media (High Definition Digital Combo Set-Top Boxes with the capability of delivering HD content through DVB-T and IPTV platforms), Zentek (“Macromedia Flash on DVB-MHP Platform” that allows broadcasters and content providers to design interactive TV applications), New Media Solutions (“Pay TV Headend System” concept).
