Strong Momentum in China-Singapore Media Collaborations

Dated: 18 November 2008

This year will mark a new milestone in the reciprocal relationship between Singapore and China in the area of media collaboration. This follows a slate of Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) inked between the two countries at Singapore Season China last year, led by an MOU on media cooperation between the Media Development Authority of Singapore (MDA) and the People’s Republic of China’s State Administration for Radio, Film and Television (SARFT).

China Film Festival 2008
Strengthening the strong government-to-government tone is the China Film Festival 2008 co-organized by SARFT and MDA as part of Asia Media Festival (AMF) 2008’s line-up of events. The China Film Festival 2008 will be opened to the public from 10 December at Golden Village cinemas.

The week long Festival will feature a total of six films. It is part of the MOU to co-organise Film Festivals in China and Singapore in 2007-2008 respectively signed between the Film Bureau under SARFT and MDA during Singapore Season in October 2007.

AMF 2008 Country Showcase
China, represented by CCTV and SARFT, will also debut at the AMF 2008 Country Showcase organised by MDA. An important industry networking opportunity for producers, financiers and distributors, the Showcase will feature speakers with whom Singapore has co-production agreements and MOUs with –including Australia, Canada and China.

It also serves as a platform for government and industry representatives from China, Australia, Europe, Germany to network and share information towards facilitating
international co-productions between each other.

An ASEAN-China forum on the topic of media collaboration is also on the cards. Singapore will play host to the ASEAN-China meeting to discuss possible areas for media collaboration, to be held at the sidelines of AMF 2008, following the China-ASEAN Summit Forum on Radio and Television held in Beijing earlier in April this year.

AMF 2008, held in Singapore from 9 to 12 December 2008, is expected to bring together more than 5,000 trade participants from around the world and will encompass the whole value chain of the media business –from media financing to content creation, production and distribution within the entire media ecosystem including TV, film and interactive digital media. AMF 2008 is hosted by MDA and organised by Reed Exhibitions.

“This year’s AMF will feature keynote speakers and panel sessions around digital convergence and the future of new media to drive in-depth discussions among thought leaders in the media industry from the US, Europe and Asia, reinforcing Singapore’s importance as an East-West gateway in exploiting the potential of multi-platform intellectual properties.

“Coupled with Singapore’s strong government-to-government relations in the areas of media collaboration, we are paving the way for more international co-productions to be created and screened to a global audience,” said Cassandra Tay, Director, Communications, Community and International Relations, MDA.

Asia Television Forum to open at Suntec Singapore
The 9th edition of the Asia Television Forum (ATF) will take place from 10 to 12 December this year at Suntec Singapore. ATF is Asia’s leading TV broadcasting and new media content marketplace where international sellers meet with Asian buyers to sell, buy and network. In 2007, a total of US$62.7 million dollars worth of transactions were closed at the market.

This year, ATF has evolved from a hotel format into an exhibition format whereby MDA will lead a delegation of Singapore companies to promote made-by-Singapore content and services at a full strength Singapore Pavilion.

As the anchor market of AMF, ATF underscores Singapore’s growing status as a premier exchange for the trading, making and distribution of media content. Leading the pack of international companies taking part in ATF are Sony Pictures, Endemol, Lionsgate, Fremantle, Granada, BBC Worldwide, MTV and Al Jazeera Children’s Channel, as well as international group pavilions from Taiwan, Korea, France and Spain.

Highlights of the Media Financing Forum
With the theme of “Understand, Adapt and Evolve –Towards a Market for Asian Content”, the Media Financing Forum (MFF) 2008, to be held on 9 December 2008, will present the views and insights of industry leaders in content development, financing, sales and distribution. MFF 2008 comprises two key components: Keynotes at the MFF Conference and one-on-one meetings with financiers at Consult@MFF.
