First-ever TV Animation Starring Water Wally Debuts

Dated: 21 January 2009

Collaboration between PUB and MDA encourages children to do their part for water

Come 23 January 2009, children can enjoy fun-filled exploits with PUB mascot, Water Wally, and learn how to protect our water resources in his first ever TV animation series “The Adventures of Water Wally”.

Through this nine-episode series, national water agency, PUB hopes to spread water messages to children between six and ten years old in an entertaining and creative manner. The audience will learn to appreciate water and to care for it so that they can have fun in water.

Supported by the Media Development Authority of Singapore (MDA) and produced by Scrawl Studios Pte Ltd, the series will be telecast as 3-minute interstitials on MediaCorp okto from 23 January to 14 February. Viewers can also watch the animation series online at a new Water Wally microsite, www.pub.gov.sg/waterwally from 23 January. The website offers show synopses, character descriptions as well as telecast details. In addition, children can look forward to testing their new-found knowledge in contests on MediaCorp okto’s website and in student newspapers, “The Little Red Dot” and “Thumbs Up”.

“To encourage the public to take ownership of the precious water resource, Water Wally was created in 2005 to bring life to PUB’s messages in a fun and interactive way. Since then Water Wally has been hugely popular, especially with kids. “The Adventures of Water Wally” rides on his popularity and reaches out to the lower primary school children. The series will reinforce our current school outreach programme to raise awareness of water issues and encourage Singaporeans to learn the importance of water from young,” said Mr Yap Kheng Guan, PUB’s Director of 3P Network.

Said Mr Yeo Chun Cheng, Programme Director for Multi-Platform Content and Chief Information Officer, MDA, “MDA is delighted to partner the PUB in bringing its recognisable mascot to life on our TV screens in “The Adventures of Water Wally”. The meaningful series not only spreads the message of water conservation and other important environment values among our youth, but is also a quality Made-by Singapore animation for children and families to enjoy.”

Following the launch of “The Adventures of Water Wally”, children can look forward to seeing Water Wally in school and library road shows as well as in games on the Water Wally microsite. DVDs of the series will also be distributed to schools as teaching materials.
