Singapore, 5 March 1996 | For Immediate Release

The Telecommunication Authority of Singapore (TAS) is pleased to announce that it will host Asia TELECOM 97, a premier international exhibition and forum, organised by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU).

The Asia TELECOM 97 exhibition, to be held at the Singapore World Trade Centre from 9 June to 14 June 1997, will be the biggest and most comprehensive event in the region for the display of the world's latest telecommunication technology and services. It is expected to attract over 400 companies from more than 30 countries.

The Asia TELECOM 97 Forum will focus on Policy, Technical, Regulatory and Economic issues. It will provide the opportunity for legislators, ministers, leaders of telecommunication administrations and the industries to discuss the region's future directions in telecommunication development and opportunities from the world-wide perspective.

Asia TELECOM 97 will be the fourth of such events to be held in Singapore and hosted by TAS. The first three Asia TELECOM events were successfully staged in Singapore in 1985, 1989 and 1993.

Asia TELECOM 93 attracted more than 323 senior personalities in telecommunications, including ministers, directors-general, chairmen and chief executive officers. 168 industry leaders chaired and/or spoke at the Forum symposia which was attended by 1,238 delegates. 32,017 visitors from 90 countries attended the Exhibition which showcased the latest products and services from 371 companies. 199 accredited press representatives from 23 countries also attended Asia TELECOM 93 to cover the event.

The ITU has selected Singapore as the venue for Asia TELECOM 97 because of Singapore's excellent infrastructure and services. ITU's decision also serves to reinforce Singapore's position as a competitive telecommunication hub as well as Asia's premier exhibition hub.

The organiser, ITU, is a specialised agency of the United Nations with its headquarters in Geneva. It is an inter-government agency responsible for the regulations and planning of telecommunications world-wide, for the establishment of equipment and system operating standards, for the co-ordination and dissemination of information required for the planning and operation of telecommunication services.
