Singapore, 24 May 2000 | For Immediate Release

Singapore ONE users will soon be able to enjoy an even wider choice of contents and applications on the nation-wide, broadband network. The Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore (IDA) today signed a Memorandum of Understanding with GigaMedia, a leading broadband Internet access service and content provider in Taiwan, to cross-distribute online broadband content.

Under this strategic broadband alliance, GigaMedia will distribute broadband content on Singapore ONE. This will add to the range and diversity of content and applications for Singapore ONE users. As part of the agreement, IDA will also put Singapore ONE content on GigaMedia's network to be accessed by Taiwan users.

Moving forward, both parties will also explore other areas of collaboration in future, such as jointly develop technology for the exchange of broadband content.

Mr Khoong Hock Yun, Assistant Chief Executive, Infocomm Development at IDA says, "These are exciting times for players in the broadband business as such partnerships will provide opportunities for regional growth in the Interactive Broadband Multimedia (IBBMM) industry, as well as enhance the relationships between our industries in the region."

IDA hopes to be able to tie-up GigaMedia and local broadband service and content providers. "This new partnership will also allow local and international players to share and exchange expertise and experience", Mr Khoong added.

The collaboration is part of the initiatives to develop the infocomm industry under Infocomm 21 - to jumpstart development and growth of the IBBMM industry, as well as to help local companies expand into regional and global markets through fostering strategic partnerships and alliances overseas.
