Singapore, 27 January 2000 | For Immediate Release

IDA is pleased to inform that there were no reports of Y2K-related disruptions to the public telecommunication infrastructure and services as Singapore crossed over into the new millennium. However, mobile phone users have experienced some difficulties in making and receiving calls at the various party venues, such as Orchard Road and Suntec City. This is due to the expected higher volume of call traffic and is not Y2K-related.

"The fact that there were no Y2K incidents affecting the telecommunication sector's smooth transition into the new millennium was due to the extensive preparations made by the public telecommunication operators, as well as their achievement of Y2K readiness status since middle of 1999", said Mr Leong Keng Thai, Deputy CEO and Director-General (Telecoms), Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore.

"With our Y2K preparedness and back-up contingency plans, we are confident that the public can continue to expect reliable telecommunication services for the rest of the day," added Mr Leong.
