Singapore, 12 November 2001 | For Immediate Release

To promote competition in the ".sg" domain name registration service, the Singapore Network Information Centre (SGNIC) Pte Ltd has today released an industry consultation paper, entitled Accreditation of Registrars for ".SG" Domain Name Registration. The paper seeks to gather industry feedback on the proposed scheme to accredit registrars for the provision of ".sg" domain name registration services in the shared registry system.

Through the shared registry system, companies accredited by SGNIC will be able to compete for the provision of ".sg" domain name registration services, under a shared, central registry operated and maintained by SGNIC. With a shared registry system, registrants will benefit from the services provided by multiple registrars, offering quality services at competitive prices. The introduction of a shared registry system is also in line with international practice, where registrars for the registry of ".com", ".org" and ".net" generic top level domains are accredited by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN). SGNIC plans to implement the shared registry system in the first half of 2002.

The aim of this industry consultation exercise is to gather feedback for the proposed accreditation scheme, as well as to facilitate industry's understanding of the scheme.

SGNIC welcomes views and comments from interested parties. All views and comments should be submitted in writing to reach SGNIC on or before 12 noon, 10 December 2001. Based on the comments received, SGNIC will consider making the appropriate modifications to the proposed accreditation scheme. SGNIC targets to release the finalised accreditation scheme by February 2002.

The consultation paper can be downloaded from the SGNIC website at www.sgnic.sg.
