The Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore (IDA) has today made available the entire 2.4 Gigahertz band (2.400 - 2.4835 GHz) for the operation of short range devices1. This is to meet the increasing demand for wider spectrum in the 2.4 GHz band by both the industry and organizations, such as the small & medium-sized enterprises and educational institutions. This will enable better performance for the deployment and usage of new varieties of short range devices, such as wireless local access networks (LANs) with transmission up to 11 Mbps. In addition, the IDA has also lifted indoor restriction use of such short range devices by industry in the 2.400 - 2.4835 GHz frequency band, so as to allow greater user mobility and flexibility.
Until recently, only part of the 2.4 GHz band was made available for use by wireless LAN because part of the band is also used by the Electronic Road Pricing (ERP) system of the Land Transport Authority (LTA). The LTA had carried out enhancement work on its ERP system to now operate outside this 2.4 GHz band. This shift will also facilitate operation of Bluetooth2 enabled devices, which also works in the same frequency band.
The IDA is of the view that opening up of the entire 2.4 GHz band for short range devices will better serve the wireless communication needs of the local industry and general public. It will also facilitate the introduction of a broad range of innovative wireless applications and service offerings, which is in line with the government's strategy to position Singapore as a launch pad for wireless developments in Asia. The opening of the 2.4 GHz spectrum band will also allow the deployment of wireless LANs in places like commercial buildings and shopping areas, to offer wireless data and/or Internet access services to their customers.
In line with international practices, the use of spectrum in the 2.400 - 2.4835 GHz band is to be shared by multiple applications, and users are advised to take steps to ensure that their operation does not cause interference among themselves. Under such arrangements, IDA shall exempt from licensing the on-site localised usage of short range devices operating in this band, subject to the power limit set by IDA. However, radiocommunication dealers or manufacturers are responsible to submit such radio equipment to IDA for approval prior to public sales.

1 Short range devices are radio transmitters with low transmitting power and low capability of causing interference to other radio equipments. These include wireless LAN, wireless headset, radio microphones, cordless phones, remote control devices, etc.
2 Bluetooth is a global wireless connectivity standard intended to allow manufacturers to develop devices that can "plug and use" without having to secure a radiocommunication licence. For example, this encompasses the evolutionary use of mobile communication, modems, printers, etc.
