More Than 2,500 Students to Pit Their Skills Against Each Other in 12
Gruelling Infocomm Challenges over Six Months

Singapore’s national infocomm competition is set to blaze a bigger and more exciting trail. Some 2,500 students are expected to hit the infocomm arena once again, and pit their skills against each other to emerge winners in the prestigious 2nd National Infocomm Competition (NIC).

Cream of the crop infocomm students from more than 100  Secondary Schools, Junior Colleges, Polytechnics and Institute of Technical Education, will compete in a series of 12 infocomm challenges starting from May 2007 till December 2007.

The NIC, now into its second year, is an initiative by the Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore (IDA), supported by the Ministry of Education. It is organised with the three Universities, five Polytechnics, ITE, Singapore Computer Society, Singapore Institute of Management, SUN Microsystems and Singapore Science Centre.  Conceived as part of the iN2015 vision, the NIC seeks to attract top talent from schools to form part of the future infocomm talent pool needed to drive Singapore’s global competitiveness.

“We need globally competitive infocomm professionals who are both technologists and strategists to transform key economic sectors and propel Singapore’s growth into the future. The National Infocomm Competition is an excellent platform to talent-scout, groom young and talented students for Singapore’s thriving infocomm industry. I strongly encourage all schools to take part in this competition and discover our next generation of infocomm professionals.” said Mr Leong Keng Thai, Deputy Chief Executive and Director-General (Telecoms) of IDA Singapore.

This year, the NIC brings together nine existing and three brand new infocomm challenges. The existing challenges include the National Software Competition, the Splash Awards, the National StrITwise Challenge, VirtualXgame, Innovate IT!, Singapore Games Creation, Alice-In-Action, Network Security Investigation and Quiz. To expose budding talent to ”hot” growth areas such as mobile technologies and software programming, there are now three new challenges, including the Mobile Animation Challenge, Algo*Mania Challenge and the JavaJive Challenge. (Please refer to NIC Factsheet (32.58KB) and Challenge factsheets for details).

To emerge winners in each circuit, schools will have to accumulate points for each challenge. Points will be given to the top six positions in each challenge and the school which accumulates the highest number of points in each circuit will emerge as the circuit champion. The circuit champions can look forward to an all-expense paid trip to top infocomm companies where they get to meet key executives and learn about the latest trends in infocomm.

More than S$300,000 worth of cash and prizes are up for grabs in the National Infocomm Competition 2007 including Playstation 3s, XBOX 360s, iPods, digital cameras and mobile phones.

The circuit champions of last year’s NIC will be going on an all-expense paid trip to Redmond, Microsoft’s headquarters and meet with its key executives to learn more about innovations for the future. They will also get to meet Bill Gates, in an exclusive meet and greet session for these aspiring infocomm professionals. Chan Wei Jian, a member of the winning secondary school team from Raffles Institution, said that it was important to be passionate and committed to the competition in order to win. Frank Chen from Hwa Chong Institution, added, “The National Infocomm Competition served as an important platform for students to apply theories into real world applications.  Through this experience, I realised the importance of a broad range of knowledge in all things infocomm.”
