Business Analytics Translational Centre to Advance Business Analytics as a Growth Area in Singapore's Infocomm Technology Sector

1. The Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR) and the Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore (IDA) opened the Business Analytics Translational Centre (BATC) today. The centre is aimed at helping companies use cutting-edge business analytics tools to mine and manage big data, so as to gain insights about their business and drive bottom-line growth.

2. "In today's highly connected society and competitive economy, organisations are looking to data to better understand their customers and achieve their goals. Analytics is key to deriving value from these data collected. We are pleased to work with A*STAR to set up the BATC as a focal point for users and developers of analytics technologies to tap on the analytics' intellectual property and capabilities available here today. We look forward to BATC's contribution to strengthen the availability and adoption of analytics in Singapore," said Mr Ronnie Tay, CEO, IDA.

3. Said Dr Raj Thampuran, Managing Director of A*STAR, "BATC's value proposition is to translate ideas and knowhow created in our SERC research institutes and universities into real-world applications for use by industry. As a platform for private-public partnerships and technology transfer, BATC will also be able to attract companies to grow their business analytics efforts and attract companies interested in this area to Singapore."

4. One of BATC's first partners is Wiley, a 200-year-old international publishing company. It will be partnering BATC to use business analytics to modernize its operations. Another partner is leading analytics company, Revolution Analytics, which has set up its lab in A*STAR's Institute for Infocomm Research (I2R). Revolution Analytics will be licensing BATC's technologies for their own analytics platform.

5. In the public sector, BATC's lead user and technology partner is the Ministry of Law. BATC will be developing prototype analytics technologies to enhance the ministry's management. This will enable the ministry to gain insights as to how it can improve its formulation of policies and operations.

6. BATC will work with IDA to encourage user organisations and government agencies to leverage BATC's analytics capabilities to apply analytics strategically, to guide business strategy and planning, as well as optimise day-to-day business processes. The specific areas of collaboration will include:

  1. Organising networking sessions for user organisations and government agencies with the infocomm industry to facilitate partnerships;

  2. Building up industry analytics capabilities through productisation and commercialisation of BA products and services from R&D IPs with user organisation and industry; and

  3. Developing a ready pool of local business analytics professionals by collaborating with Research Institutions and Institutes of Higher Learning (IHLs) to transfer analytics knowledge and skills through training and awareness seminars/workshops.

7. Another function of BATC is to provide training opportunities for researchers, engineers, IT professionals and business analysts from academia and industry to expand the talent pool in business analytics. The centre will involve the trainees in R&D or applications development projects. This will develop a pipeline of talent capable of applying analytics approaches in various domains.

8. Said Mr Lim Chuan Poh, Chairman of A*STAR, "BATC is a meaningful contribution from A*STAR and IDA to help both the public and private sectors innovate in their work processes to achieve greater productivity. It is also a useful demonstration of how public-public collaboration can establish impactful value-creating platforms for our economy."

9. A Memorandum of Understanding will also be signed between BATC and its partners in industry and IHLs. This will unlock the economic potential of the intellectual properties available in the research institutes and IHLs.

10. The centre was opened by Mr. S. Iswaran, Minister in Prime Minister's Office and Second Minister for Home Affairs and Trade & Industry.
