IDA, Marshall Cavendish Education, and Knewton to Develop Personalised Adaptive Mathematics Learning Solution for Singapore

11 August 2015 - Marshall Cavendish Education, the leading primary school textbook publisher and Learning Management System (LMS) provider in Singapore, will be partnering with leading U.S. adaptive learning technology company Knewton to develop a personalised adaptive Mathematics solution that will enable more effective independent learning for primary schools students in Singapore.

Singapore, 11 August 2015 | For Immediate Release

Marshall Cavendish Education, the leading primary school textbook publisher and Learning Management System (LMS) provider in Singapore, will be partnering with leading U.S. adaptive learning technology company Knewton to develop a personalised adaptive Mathematics solution that seeks to enable more effective independent learning for students in Singapore. Supported by the Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore (IDA), the solution will begin its pilot in 2016 with interested schools.

This solution will recognise the different abilities of students and their diverse levels of understanding of mathematical concepts. It keeps students’ attention and interest by automatically adjusting content to suit each student’s ability. The solution will also intelligently and automatically recommend what pieces of content a student should work on, even recommending content across grade levels to ensure that students get the advanced or remedial content they need at precisely the moment they need it. This personalisation of content and learning pathways encourages students to become more confident learners.

Promoting deeper understanding of Mathematics concepts

This solution will promote a deeper understanding of Mathematics concepts, improve learning outcomes, and provide students with a more customised learning experience for Mathematics. Additional levels and subjects will be considered for launch later.

The product will be powered by Knewton’s cutting-edge adaptive learning engine used by nearly 10 million students through its partnerships with 25 of the world’s leading learning companies in 20 countries. Knewton has served more than 15 billion recommended activities to students through these partnerships to date.

A first-of-its-kind Adaptive Mathematics Learning Solution

Through technology, this first-of-its-kind solution in Singapore will empower educators to better support learning for every student in every Mathematics class they teach and more easily differentiate instruction. A detailed dashboard will provide teachers with insights on how students are learning and where students need further support, allowing teachers to prioritise their limited time.

“This project is an example of our technology industry and end-users working together on new innovative ideas, as part of Singapore’s Smart Nation initiative. Developing EdTech innovation that helps both students and teachers to be more effective in the learning and teaching process is critical in an increasingly knowledge-based world,” said Mr Khoong Hock Yun, Assistant Chief Executive, IDA. “Adaptive learning technology helps create a learning experience that is highly tailored to each student. This level of personalisation will make learning more meaningful and engaging. With more targeted resources delivered to students, they will be more motivated to learn on their own and track their own progress to meet the learning objectives. Teachers and even parents will be able to see their children’s potential strengths and weaknesses, and provide more specific guidance in their learning.”

“We understand that the one of the biggest challenges teachers face today is being able to address the diverse needs of every student with differentiated instruction and resources. In today’s increasingly digital world, it is important to empower teachers with tools that complement and deliver quality content, tailored to each student’s needs,” said Ms Joy Tan, General Manager of Marshall Cavendish Education. She added, “With Singapore’s consistent top performance in international studies such as Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) and Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA), this partnership aims to give students access to personalised learning with next-generation solutions that will help them learn more effectively and efficiently so they continue to excel.”

“Singapore’s curricula and public school system are among the most highly respected in the world,” said Jose Ferreira, founder and CEO of Knewton. “Singapore is forward-looking in its adoption of cutting-edge technologies for education and we look forward to bringing personalised learning to more students.”
