Mrs Tan Ching Yee, Chief Executive Officer, Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore - Welcome Remarks
IDA Distinguish Infocomm Speaker Event, Olivia Room, Raffles City Convention Centre

Singapore, 25 August 2003

Good morning,
Mr Glover Ferguson, Chief Scientist, Accenture Technology Labs
Distinguished Guests
Ladies and Gentlemen

It gives me great pleasure in welcoming Mr Glover Ferguson, Chief Scientist of Accenture Technology Labs, to Singapore.

Singapore is always on the look-out for new opportunities to bring the benefits of ICT to all and to grow the infocomm sector. At this point, this has become even more urgent as Singapore seeks to re-make itself. For the infocomm sector, there is strong interest to find the "next big thing" after the Internet-driven dot-com bubble.

IDA is therefore delighted to host Glover as our Distinguished Infocomm Speaker and to hear his views on the next big thing, or perhaps the next small thing that will stir the industry.

Glover drives Accenture's technology vision and turns technology innovation into business results. He is an industry luminary and his takes on future developments of infocomm technology are highly sought after by the world's business press.

He will be sharing insights on how Reality Online can present a new future for everyone - a world in which objects have senses and can interact freely with you. Just like a Disney cartoon, the teacup can speak with the teapot for a refill and the plants in your garden will speak to the water sprinkler when they are thirsty. For the shopaholics among us, the age of smarter shopping has arrived. There's no need to comb the racks or wait for sales staff to ransack the storeroom to find that terrific shirt in your size while you wait hopefully. It also means an end to out of stock disappointment. Sensors on the merchandise will allow the store to find them easily, track their sales items and restock popular items quickly. For the company, it means they are better able to meet customer demand and in doing so, increase their profit. I've just given you a flavour of how sensors, or smart chips can work for us. The world of Reality Online spells new possibilities for companies of all shapes and sizes.

In closing, I wish all of you a fruitful discovery as Glover treats us to a preview of what lies ahead on the horizon and how we can all plug into Reality Online.

Thank you.
