Good morning. It is my pleasure to join you today to unveil HP's new Asia Pacific Recovery Centre in Singapore.
First, let me congratulate HP on the opening of its new centre. HP is an old friend of Singapore, having first set up operations here in 1970. Today, HP has grown to become one of the largest multi-national companies in Singapore, with a total staff strength of 6,000. Its Asia Pacific and Japan headquarters are also now based in Singapore.
The establishment of HP's second Asia Pacific Recovery Centre here affirms Singapore's standing as an ideal outsourcing location for Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery services. Like HP, I hope other MNCs will consider Singapore as a base for their BCDR activities.
Singapore is free from natural disasters, and we have strengthened this intrinsic advantage by building a world-class IT and Telecommunications infrastructure. For instance, IDA led the industry and the IT Standards Committee to launch the world's first standard for BCDR service providers in December last year.
With this standard, companies now enjoy greater business certainty as it specifies stringent requirements for service providers, helping companies secure and recover their critical data especially in the face of catastrophic events. This 'trusted' operating environment adds to Singapore's reputation as a secure and trusted Infocomm Hub.
Such BCDR activities and the setting up of HP's Recovery Centre underscore the increasing importance of having a BCDR strategy. In fact, as Lee Chew mentioned, the recent Hurricane Wilma and the earthquake in Kashmir further reinforces this need. I therefore encourage companies to consider partnering with BCDR providers in Singapore.
With that, we thank HP for locating its Asia Pacific Recovery Centre in Singapore, and we look forward to your continued foresight in the BCDR space.
