The Media Development Authority of Singapore’s (MDA) International Advisory Panel (IAP) today concluded its inaugural meeting, held from 14 and 15 November at The Raffles Hotel. The Panel, chaired by Dr Tan Chin Nam, Chairman, Media Development Authority of Singapore (MDA), comprises leading international personalities from the media and business sectors (Please refer to Annex for a list of the IAP members.)

The Panel reviewed and commended Singapore’s progress in becoming a key international city for media businesses and functions as charted by its Media 21 blueprint. Moving forward, the Panel made recommendations on how Singapore can leverage on its existing strengths to become a prominent global player by taking advantage of arising growth opportunities.

Dr Tan Chin Nam, Chairman of the IAP said, “The two-day meeting focused on the global opportunities for Singapore in the international media business and how we can tap into these key issues and trends. The global media industry is extremely dynamic. It is therefore important for us to grasp and respond nimbly to major developments. While our direction has been mapped out by the Media21 blueprint, we need to constantly align our priorities and co-evolve with the global media landscape.”

The IAP’s recommendations include:

Building on Singapore’s impressive competencies in education, financial services, life-sciences and information technology, the MDA should step up support for new initiatives in information-based media
Encourage international talent to bring their ideas to Singapore, develop them here and jointly exploit them commercially worldwide

Following the success of developing creative talent, Singapore should now build a critical mass of media business expertise through the transfer of international skills, experience and knowledge
Singapore to position itself as a leader in versioning, adapting and translating original Asian content for the regional and world market  Build on Singapore’s Intellectual Property expertise and experience, and share it with the region

Leverage on Singapore’s reputation for reliability, efficiency, transparency and legal and physical infrastructure in attracting top media companies and talent to make this the choice launchpad for initiatives
Explore ways to hone management experience, as well as imbibe critical values such as confidence and tenacity in potential leaders in local media companies through meaningful attachments to enlightened private organisations
Continue to attract investments in key media infrastructure to better position Singapore as a regional production and post-production hub.
