Acts and Regulations

As a statutory body, IMDA’s various roles are enshrined in the Info-communications Media Development Authority Act, passed in August 2016.

Other regulatory frameworks are relevant to the IMDA in discharging its regulatory responsibilities are, listed below:

• Info-communications Media Development Authority Act 
  An Act that establishes the IMDA, to provide for its functions and powers, and for matters connected therewith.
  
  
• Broadcasting Act 1994
  An Act to regulate dealing in, the operation of and ownership in broadcasting services and broadcasting apparatus, and for matters connected therewith. 
  
  
• The Electronic Transactions Act
  An Act that covers matters such as electronic records, signatures and contracts and other matters.

• Films Act 1981
  An Act relating to the possession, importation, making, distribution and exhibition of films. 
  
  
• Newspaper and Printing Presses Act 1974
  An Act for the licensing of newspaper companies and for matters connected therewith. 
  
  
• Personal Data Protection Act
  An Act that governs the collection, use, disclosure and protection of personal data by organisations. 
  
  
• Postal Services Act (Cap. 237A)
  An Act that covers matters such as the licensing of postal services for the conveyance of letters, postal services and systems and other matters. 
  
  
• Public Entertainments Act (Cap. 257) 
  An Act to provide for the regulation of public entertainments and meetings. 
  
  
• Telecommunications Act 1999
  An Act that relates to the licensing of telecom systems and services and grant of spectrum rights, among other matters.

  An Act to prevent the importation, distribution or reproduction of undesirable publications and for purposes connected there with.

Other Infocomm Related Acts and Policies

• Spam Control Act 2007
  An Act that relates to control of unsolicited commercial electronic messages and prohibition of dictionary attack and address harvesting software. There is currently no subsidiary legislation under the Spam Control Act. View more details on the Spam Control Framework.
  
  
• Intellectual Property Rights
  The lead agency for Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) protection in Singapore is the Intellectual Property Office of Singapore (IPOS). IMDA provides support in the infocomm aspects.
  
  
• Domain Names
  Under the IDA Act (Cap 137A), IDA has the power to authorise or regulate the registration, administration and management of domain names in Singapore. The Singapore Network Information Centre (SGNIC) was set up in October 1995 with the main purpose of administering the Internet domain name space in Singapore. It is the central registry recognised by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) to administer third-level domain name registration under the ".sg" domain name. SGNIC cooperates with the international, regional and local Internet communities to ensure a stabilised and efficient operation of the ".sg" domain name space in support of applications provided over the Internet.
