As a statutory body, IMDA’s various roles are enshrined in the Info-communications Media Development Authority Act, passed in August 2016.

An Act that establishes the IMDA, to provide for its functions and powers, and for matters connected therewith.

An Act to regulate dealing in, the operation of and ownership in broadcasting services and broadcasting apparatus, and for matters connected therewith.
- The Electronic Transactions Act
An Act that covers matters such as electronic records, signatures and contracts and other matters.

An Act relating to the possession, importation, making, distribution and exhibition of films.
- Newspaper and Printing Presses Act (Cap. 206)
An Act for the licensing of newspaper companies and for matters connected therewith.

An Act that governs the collection, use, disclosure and protection of personal data by organisations.

Other Infocomm Related Acts and Policies
- The Spam Control Act (Cap. 311A)

- Intellectual Property Rights
The lead agency for Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) protection in Singapore is the Intellectual Property Office of Singapore (IPOS). IMDA provides support in the infocomm aspects.
- Domain Names
Under the IDA Act (Cap 137A), IDA has the power to authorise or regulate the registration, administration and management of domain names in Singapore. The Singapore Network Information Centre (SGNIC) was set up in October 1995 with the main purpose of administering the Internet domain name space in Singapore. It is the central registry recognised by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) to administer third-level domain name registration under the ".sg" domain name. SGNIC cooperates with the international, regional and local Internet communities to ensure a stabilised and efficient operation of the ".sg" domain name space in support of applications provided over the Internet.
