Singapore, 27 January 2000 | For Immediate ReleaseIDA will lift restrictions on the tie-in period for telecommunication service packages, with effect from 1 April 2000.
Previously, this tie-in period was limited to a maximum period of 1 year, but not extending beyond 31 March 2000 for fixed-line and mobile phone services. With the introduction of full competition in the telecommunications sector from 1 April 2000, IDA will remove the restriction on the tie-in period. This means that service providers and equipment dealers can set the tie-in duration to cater to their customers' needs and preferences in a liberalised environment. They will also have the freedom to package their services and products in creative ways to attract customers.
Consumers will be able to enjoy the benefits of a fully liberalised environment, which includes exercising their choice over a range of innovative service and product offerings, in a way which best suits their individual needs. Nevertheless consumers should examine carefully the terms and conditions of the marketing and promotion packages of various service providers before exercising their choice.
There will be no changes to the tie-in conditions for existing service contracts scheduled to expire on 31 March 2000.
