Party Political Broadcasts And Constituency Political Broadcasts For General Election 2020

The Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA) has allocated airtime on free-to-air radio and television for Party Political Broadcasts (PPBs) and Constituency Political Broadcasts (CPBs)1 during General Election (GE) 2020.

Party Political Broadcasts (PPBs)

Since the 1980 GE, political parties that field at least six candidates under a recognised party symbol are eligible for airtime on free-to-air radio and television. Independents and political parties fielding fewer than six candidates under the same recognised party symbol are not eligible for the PPBs.

The amount of airtime allocated is determined by the number of candidates fielded by the party. The order of the PPBs is meanwhile determined by the number of candidates fielded, with the broadcast of the party fielding the least number of candidates aired first, and that fielding the largest number of candidates aired last.

For GE 2020, two PPB slots will air across 19 TV and radio channels on

  • Thursday, 2 July 2020, from 8pm; and
  • Thursday, 9 July 2020, from 8pm

Constituency Political Broadcasts (CPBs)

CPBs are special, one-off arrangements for the GE 2020, in view of the COVID-19 situation. These CPBs will give political parties and candidates more airtime to put their messages out to voters.

Type of Constituency  Airtime Allocated
Single Member Constituency (SMC)

Group Representative Constituency (GRC)
*For GRCs, parties can decide if one or more members will speak during the allotted time.

3 minutes per candidate

12 minutes per 4-member GRC
15 minutes per 5-member GRC

The order of the CPBs is based on the alphabetical ordering of the constituency. The broadcast for each constituency will begin with the incumbent, followed by other contesting parties or candidates.

For GE 2020, the CPBs will air on Mediacorp’s Channel 5 on 3 – 8 July 2020, from 7pm.

Details of Broadcasts

Details of the PPBs and CPBs will be released on Mediacorp’s website.

The full broadcast schedule of PPBs can viewed here (110.29KB)(subject to changes).

For CPBs, the broadcast line-ups will be published on Mediacorp’s website on each day of broadcast.
