Artificial Intelligence (AI) refers to the study and use of intelligent machines to mimic human action and thought. With the availability of Big Data, advances in computing, and invention of new algorithms, AI has risen as a disruptive technology in recent years.

Leveraging opportunities in AI to improve lives and transform businesses

Whether it’s rendering better healthcare or servicing the banking needs of our seniors, AI can be applied to a variety of industries to create better living, stronger communities and more opportunities for all.

With much to gain, Singapore is looking to develop niches within AI R&D, building local capabilities and fostering partnerships across relevant parties.

AI SG (AI Singapore)

AI SG is a national programme to catalyse, synergise and boost Singapore’s AI capabilities. It is driven by a partnership between the National Research Foundation (NRF), the Smart Nation and Digital Government Office (SNDGO), the Economic Development Board (EDB), the Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA), SGInnovate and the Integrated Health Information Systems (IHiS). Up to $150 million will be invested over five years, by the NRF.

AI Apprenticeship Programme (AIAP)

Aimed at training fresh graduates with programming experience to becoming AI professionals, AIAP is a full-time, 9-month programme. It blends classroom, online, and hands-on project work, and will be mentored by AI, Big Data and High Performance Computing practitioners.

AI for Everyone (AI4E)

This programme will introduce AI to 10,000 students and working adults and is conducted free of charge by AI SG. Co-supported by IMDA, Microsoft and Intel, its aim is to demonstrate how AI can improve the way one lives, works and plays.

AI for Industry (AI4I)

This programme seeks to enhance 2,000 working professionals’ and students’ competitiveness in a digital economy by equipping them with basic AI and data competency skills. The three month online-offline hybrid curriculum is developed by AI SG and supported by IMDA, Microsoft, Intel and DataCamp, an online learning platform for Data Science and AI.

AI for Business

AI Business Partnership Programme (AIBPP)

By pairing local companies with AI solution providers to solve problems using AI, AIBPP seeks to encourage AI adoption among businesses in Singapore.

The programme facilitates partnerships for sector-wide improvement and growth using AI, supports local companies to co-develop AI solutions, and encourages mentorship/consultancy for AI transformation.

Digital Services Lab

Comprising an engineering team which includes coders, data scientists and other specialists, the Digital Services Lab will work with government agencies, Institutes of Higher Learning and research institutes to deploy tech capabilities for the industry.

Open Source AI Libraries

To spur the growth and innovation of AI-related apps in and for the nation, IMDA is setting up free and open-source AI libraries. These libraries will contain collections of Application Programming Interfaces (APIs), source codes, databases and more.

Currently, two libraries that have been created are the National Speech Corpus V1.0 and Intelligent Sensing Toolbox.

Using AI and Data responsibly

As Singapore develops its digital economy, a trusted ecosystem is key—one where industries can benefit from tech innovations while consumers are assured. It is thus timely to discuss and address ethical issues that may arise from the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Big Data as new business models and innovations emerge from the emergent AI space.

Proposed AI Governance Framework

By explaining how AI systems work, building good data accountability practices, and creating open and transparent communication, the framework aims to promote public understanding and trust in technologies.

Data Innovation

Data has the potential to reshape entire industries. However, between different companies, it is often fragmented. In addition, the lack of trusted platforms for the discovery and exchange of data for meaningful innovation raises concerns about breaching data protection regulations.

IMDA promotes the responsible use of data so that innovative technologies and businesses can explore and grow, while building consumer trust.

Data Collaborative Programme

This programme offers industry operators with regulatory guidance and provisioning for sandboxing, co-funding, and technical support, so they can partake in safe and economically-sustainable data sharing.

This programme also allows IMDA to understand how companies use data, through the different data-sharing models and methods, with the objective of developing a regulatory framework that will allow IMDA/PDPC to oversee and regulate these activities in future.

Singapore’s AI Advisory Council

To drive awareness of the benefits and understand the challenges of AI (such as on ethics and legal issues), IMDA is engaging key stakeholders including the government, industry, consumers and academia to collaboratively shape the government’s plans for the AI ecosystem.

Such discourse will inform the government’s plans to support Singapore as a hub for AI development and innovation, and help Singapore effectively respond to global developments.

The council is made up of members from diverse backgrounds, including international leaders in AI, advocates of social and consumer interests, and leader of local companies who are keen to make use of AI.
