Singaporean thespian Chin Han, who has acted in Hollywood blockbusters The Dark Knight and 2012, will walk the red carpet on 12 May as part of the cast of yet another sterling production Restless, the opening film of the Un Certain Regard section. On 17 May, Eric Khoo’s animated feature Tatsumi, which is competing in the Un Certain Regard section, will hold its world premiere. Launched in 1978, the Un Certain Regard section is a well-established film event known for highlighting cutting-edge original works. The success of Tatsumi marks the seventh consecutive year that Singapore productions have made the cut for the Cannes Film Festival Official Selection.

Also flying the Singapore flag as part of the Official Selection is the short film Suu and Uchikawa, which is competing in the Cinéfondation Selection devoted to the search for new talents. The 11-minute short film is directed by Nathanael Carton, a graduate student studying in the Tisch School of the Arts Asia in Singapore. It is one of 16 films of the Cinéfondation Selection picked from 1,589 entries submitted by 360 film schools around the world.

Apart from local talents participating in the Cannes Film Festival, Singapore film companies are promoting their works to potential buyers at the Cannes Film Market taking place alongside the Festival. The schedule of market screenings includes MediaCorp Raintree’s It’s a Great Great World, Moving Images’ Ticket Out and Elixir Entertainment’s Gurushetram 24 Hours of Anger.

On the short film front, Cindy Khoo, an aspiring film producer who is currently an undergraduate at the Nanyang Technological University School of Art, Design &Media, will be participating in the Cannes Film Market’s Short Film Corner to network with potential distributors for the short films she represents.
