Singapore-Made Animation Takes Off In International TV Market In Cannes

Singapore media companies have announced co-production partnerships with international partners and secured distribution of Singapore-made animation series in key markets. These announcements were made at MIPTV, the leading marketplace for television programmes held in Cannes, France from 3 to 7 April.

New Animation Series for the international markets

Singapore’s Big Communications has partnered Australia’s leading producer of children’s animated programming, Yoram Gross-EM.TV and award-winning New Zealand’s Flux Animation Studio to produce 3-D animated comedy, action, adventure series, Master Raindrop, based on Asian myths and legends.

In another coup, award-winning Singaporean visual effects and animation studio, Infinite Frameworks announced its partnership with leading Canadian CG animation production company, Mainframe Entertainment, Inc. to produce the new computer animated series Ghost Hunter Dax, a 26-episode series scheduled for fall 2007.

In a landmark deal involving Australia, New Zealand and Singapore, beloved children’s books Milly Molly will come alive on screen to produce the 13-episode Milly Molly series which will be launched at MIPCOM Junior in October 2006.

Pre-sale to China’s CCTV

Making a key inroad into the China market and paving the way for international sales, Singapore animation companies, Character Farm, and leading production company, Mega Media and China’s Wogee Toons are jointly producing animation series, Piko The Silkworm, which has been pre-sold to China’s CCTV.

Commenting on these achievements in Cannes, Mr Seto Lok Yin, Director of Industry Development at the Media Development Authority of Singapore (MDA) said, ""Singapore has participated in MIPTV for the past 6 years. We are very heartened with the increasing recognition in and demand for Singapore-made content. This has not only generated visibility for Singapore, but also international partnerships for our local media companies and sales of our TV programmes, films and animation worldwide.

“This year, Singapore-made animation content has again proven its potential to go global. The MDA will continue to support promising local media enterprises to expand their reach beyond Singapore and produce original animated programmes for the international audience.”

A total of 43 Singapore media companies comprising 86 participants are participating at MIPTV 2006. Led by the MDA, the Singaporean contingent is also presenting a lineup of TV programmes ranging from fashion reality, lifestyle, sports, documentary, entertainment, drama to animation in high-definition format as well as standard definition format.

Making a debut are programmes such as fashion reality series, Style Me, where 12 contestants vie to be the next top celebrity stylist and a chance to dress super model Rachel Hunter;entertainment series K-ZINE, which brings viewers the hottest and latest in Korean entertainment;and Cricket Warriors, a documentary on the ancient tradition of cricket fighting in China and its evolution into a multi-million-dollar industry.

The MDA and the Singaporean media industry have been attending MIPTV and its sister event, MIPCOM, since 2001. MIPTV and MIPCOM are among the world’s largest trade shows for TV and media content. These trade shows serve as key platforms for Singaporean TV producers, companies and animation studios to showcase and market their programmes world-wide as well as explore collaborative partnerships with international media players.

The Singapore contingent comprises 6-6-8, AFC Network, Association of Independent Television Production Companies, Big Communications, Film Formations, Gulin Productions, Infinite Frameworks, Lingan Mill, MCN International, MediaCorp News, MediaCorp TV Singapore, MediaCorp TV 12 Singapore, Mega Media, Mojeu, Ochre Pictures, Peach Blossom Media, Scrawl Studios, Studio Bizzaro, SweetRain Productions, Symbiosis Licensing, The Moving Visuals Co, The Right Angle Media, Upside Down Concepts, Wild Mama TV and YSY International Services and the MDA.

The Singapore Pavilion is located at Stand 16.17 at the Cannes Palais des Festivals.
