Singapore, 18 March 1997 | For Immediate Release

1-Net Singapore Pte. Ltd., the joint-venture company incorporated by the Singapore ONE infrastructural consortium, has awarded a S$5.9 million contract to Alcatel Singapore Pte. Ltd. for the supply of the core network equipment for the Singapore ONE project. The joint-venture company comprises Singapore Telecom, Singapore Cable Vision and Singapore Communication Investments, the investment arm of the Telecommunication Authority of Singapore (TAS).

Alcatel was selected for the award from 14 submissions from international telecommunication vendors. The network equipment will be deployed for the initial development of the Singapore ONE Core Network and will include the installation of ATM switches at broadband network access points over the island of Singapore in the next 12 months. The network will consist of a combination of AX1000 and HSS1100 switches.

With the pilot commercial operation of the network starting in the middle of this year, Singapore will be offering very high-speed multimedia communications to the homes through both Singapore Telecom's ADSL (Asynchronous Digital Subscriber Line) modems and Singapore Cable Vision's cable modems. This is a major milestone for Singapore ONE, a national goal to build a pervasive info-communication infrastructure for the nation in preparation for the impending multimedia wave. Singapore ONE, which is spearheaded by TAS, National Computer Board (NCB), and National Science and Technology Board (NSTB), and supported by the Economic Development Board (EDB) and the Singapore Broadcasting Authority (SBA), was launched by Mr. Mah Bow Tan, the Minister of Communications last June.
